- What’s the best scenario for high school seniors to go through the study?
We’ve found that it is better if it isn’t just parent and child going through the study together but rather a group of students participating with peers. Groups from church or school create a fun experience around the videos and also build peer accountability.
- Is College Ready only for high school seniors?
No. College Ready can be used equally well with first semester college freshmen. The goal of College Ready is to prepare students to make the most of their college experience and have a plan of action for their four years on campus. It is best to get them on track when the majority of their college education is ahead.
- Is there an optimal group size?
No. Group sizes could be 20 students or 200 students for a large group setting and video showing. However, if your group is over 20 students you will need to make arrangements for smaller discussion groups with discussion group leaders. Consult the Leader’s Guide for more information.
- Do co-ed groups work?
We’ve found that both co-ed and non co-ed groups work well.
- Can the six sessions be crammed into a weekend?
No. Students need time to process the material and develop their “wise moves.” By cramming all the sessions into 48 hours, you minimize the “life change” impact.
- How do parents get involved?
Parents may host a College Ready group in their home. Or for groups hosted by a church or school, it is strongly encouraged to have both parents and their students attend the optional introductory session. Parents are also asked to join their student for Session 3. Parents should seriously consider the option of aptitude testing for their child. It gives students great direction and focus in their academic and occupational pursuits.
- Is College Ready linked to the aptitude assessment centers recommended?
No. The three testing centers recommended were selected only after careful research and consideration. There is no relationship or financial agreement between College Ready and the testing centers.
- Many people reading The Leaders Guide hear stress on “making College Ready a transformational experience.” What do you mean by that?
Students need fun and mutual support in order to take the College Ready study from “just watching a video” into a serious exercise in “getting ready for college.” When the leader makes the study an exciting event with quality surroundings and interaction, it moves the student from being a passive viewer into someone equipped to embrace the information and start college in a more mature way. College Ready is not about showing videos; it’s about changing lives.
